2010: Year of India? From Cinderella to Superpower

Celebrated by Oscar-winning films (Slumdog Millionaire), once a Cinderella of Asia, today on the rise, India sees the year that has just begun as a turning point. Indeed, it is a candidate to become the protagonist of the 21st century, even with more chances than its rival-friend China, the United States, and Europe increasingly in search of a political and economic identity.

Over the past twelve months, the state led by Manmohan Singh has succeeded first to emerge from the financial crisis and to unfold his great potentialespecially in the energy field. But let's start with when the most populous country on the planet shifted gears.

Because it will be the year of India

In the past decade India has lived a real economic miracle, which has led it to be the second country in terms of GDP growth worldwide. A recent study (India 2039: an affluent society in one generatrion, report by the Asia Development Bank for the Emerging Markets Forum) for India a future as the second world economy, predicting the transition from 2% of world GDP in 2007 to a possible e probable stratospheric 18%, exactly in twenty years. To transform these forecasts into concrete facts, the current and future governments (whatever it may be) will have to materialize the enormous development potential deriving from human capital and from those of the internal market, inserting them within a reform of its political system- administrative.

Among the challenges to face, and overcome, the energy one stands out.
First of all, it should be considered that, despite the positive expectations, more than half (55%) of India's population has no access to electricity today. A significant figure, caused both by the strong demographic increase and - above all - by the large incidence of rural areas on the territory. India is working hard on this aspect and has prepared an ambitious national energy plan.

The goal, in addition to the usability of energy by the people, is to achieve a progressive diversification of supply sources. To date, there is a massive presence of coal plants (a fuel of which India is very rich), oil and nuclear power, but the future is designed in a "green" way.
The new Plan aims to produce 20,000 megawatts of solar energy in ten years, expanding it to 100,000 MW by 2030 and 200,000 by 2050. Gigantic figures, as well as the planned investments, equal to about 160 billion dollars.

Not only "green energy" but in the plans of the Indian establishment. In an effort to increase its presence in Africa, India has signed a memorandum of understanding with Angola offering extensive cooperation in the Angolan and neighboring countries' oil and gas fields. The document was signed between ONGC Videsh Ltd. Indiana and Sonangol, an Angolan nationally owned company. The text outlines a framework of strategic cooperation between the two states in the oil sector, to be consolidated through investments and research in the deep sea. The agreement was developed, specifically, in the production of oil, in the natural gas sector, on the construction of a refinery and the modernization of existing plants, on the training and consultancy of Indian experts.
