L\u2019<\/span>export of agricultural machinery<\/b> made in Italy<\/span> continues to be a key pillar for the industry, despite the decline in domestic sales in the country in recent years. In fact, global demand has remained high, <\/span>Supporting the business of domestic agricultural mechanics<\/b>, although there was a decline in 2023. Pending the release of complete data for 2024, the sector closed out the previous year with record revenue of 16.4 billion euros, marking a 61% increase compared to 2022 (Source: AgroNotizie).<\/span><\/p>\n

This outstanding achievement was largely driven by the <\/span>Exports of tractors, agricultural machinery, components and landscaping equipment<\/b>, which constitute about 70% of the value of Italian production.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2023, tractor exports decreased slightly in terms of units compared to 2022 (-4.2%, with 42,146 machines), but increased by 17% in terms of value, from a turnover of just over 1.7 billion to nearly 2 billion euros (Source: FederUnacoma processing of Istat data).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to these results, Italy has been ranked fourth in the 2023 ranking of major tractor exporting countries, preceded only by Germany, the United States, and France.<\/span><\/p>\n

Export of agricultural machinery<\/span> made in Italy<\/span>: a comprehensive view\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

As for exports of other agricultural machinery, which are tracked by weight rather than by number of units, the trend is similar to that of tractors. In 2023, in fact, there was a 31% decline in terms of weight, but a <\/span>7.4% increase<\/b> in value compared to 2022, rising from 4.7 billion to 5 billion euros. This growth was made possible by an increase in export revenue both within the EU-27, with a rise of 7.21% year-on-year, and outside the EU, with an increase of 7.71% year-on-year (Source: calculations <\/span>FederUnacoma<\/span> on Istat data).<\/span><\/p>\n

As Lorenzo Galanti, General Manager of the ICE Agency, stated during<\/span> the latest EIMA 2024 presentation<\/span><\/a>: <\/span>\u201cThe agricultural machinery sector represents a true excellence of Made in Italy technology. In particular, we are recognized for specific expertise in solutions for small and medium-sized farms, which mainly concern high added value crops.<\/span><\/i>\u201c.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geopolitical Challenges and Impacts on Agricultural Machinery Exports<\/span><\/h3>\n

Although holding a prestigious international role, the\u2019<\/span>export of agricultural machinery<\/span><\/a> Italian industry faces several challenges, especially in non-EU markets. Ongoing conflicts and geopolitical tensions have had a significant impact on the sector. In particular, the worsening conflict in the Middle East has hit the sector hard. This has caused a drastic drop in transit through Bab el-Mandeb and the <\/span>Suez Canal<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Consequently, ships transporting goods between Europe and Asia have been forced to reroute around Africa, a significantly longer and more expensive route. Among the sectors most affected by the maritime shipping crisis is that of agricultural machinery.<\/span><\/p>\n

The main buying countries for Italian tractors and agricultural machinery<\/span><\/h3>\n

What are the <\/span>Foreign countries buying more tractors produced in Italy<\/b>? Over the past year, the main buyers of Italian tractors have been non-EU European countries, which accounted for 16.1% of the total, or more than 6,700 units. The Americas followed, with a share of 11.1%, corresponding to approximately 4,600 units.<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking at individual countries, the <\/span>France<\/span><\/a> is confirmed as the main trading partner for Italian tractors, with exports exceeding 344 million euros. It is followed by the <\/span>Germany<\/span><\/a> with nearly 252 million, Turkey with over 182 million and the United States with over 171 million. The other countries in the Top Ten <\/span>of 2023<\/span> they are predominantly European, with the exception of South Africa, and the value of exports to these countries is growing compared to 2022 (Source: Processing <\/span>FederUnacoma <\/span>on Istat data).<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019<\/span>Europe<\/b> also remains the main market for other agricultural machinery produced in Italy. The largest buyers of agricultural machinery other than tractors, however, are the United States, with exports worth nearly 706 million euros. In second and third place are France, with more than 632 million, and Germany, with about 510 million, respectively. The ranking <\/span>2023 <\/span>The main importers of Italian machinery are dominated by European countries, with the sole exception of Chile.<\/span><\/p>\n

The value of\u2019<\/span>export of agricultural machinery<\/span> to major EU markets is almost always up from 2022. However, as with tractors, the growth in value is attributable to a <\/span>list price increase<\/b> rather than an increase in export volumes. In fact, according to a sample survey by FederUnacoma, the number of machines exported in 2023 decreased compared to 2022 in almost all segments, with the exception of handling and transport equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Exports have played a crucial role for the sector, experiencing steady growth in the last decade up to 2023, with an <\/span>9.3% increase<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for non-European countries, despite the general contraction of the global market, the <\/span>GATE countries<\/b> (*<\/span>Growing, Ambitious, Transforming, Entrepreneurial<\/span><\/i>*), including. <\/span>India<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Vietnam<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Turkey<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Saudi Arabia<\/span><\/a> e <\/span>United Arab Emirates<\/span><\/a>, have shown strong demand for Italian agricultural machinery, recording a <\/span>46.9% growth<\/span><\/a> 2023. This increase is <\/span>particularly significant<\/b> in an economic context characterized by uncertainties and geopolitical challenges, highlighting the ability of Italian producers to adapt and respond to the specific needs of these rapidly changing markets.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, more markets are opening up in Southeast Asia, which offer attractive opportunities for Italian producers. <\/span>Last year<\/span>, l\u2019<\/span>Indonesia<\/b><\/a> imported 106 Italian tractors, as well as a significant number of other agricultural machinery, according to FederUnacoma data. This growing interest in Italian products in Indonesia reflects not only <\/span>Italian agricultural machinery quality and innovation<\/b>, but also the growing <\/span>Need to modernize agriculture<\/b> in these regions to increase efficiency and productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Attention to these emerging markets could lead to <\/span>Closer collaborations between Italian companies and local partners<\/b>, facilitating access to new technologies and know-how.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ability to penetrate these markets not only strengthens the presence of Made in Italy internationally, but also helps to <\/span>diversify sources of income<\/b>, reducing dependence on traditional markets and increasing the resilience of the Italian agricultural sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

The growth of Italian agricultural machinery exports to the United States.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Le <\/span>Italian exports to the United States<\/b><\/a> continue to show a <\/span>positive trend<\/b>. <\/span>In the past three years<\/span>, the number of tractors exported increased from 2,981 to 3,052 units, an increase in value of more than 61 million euros. At the same time, agricultural machinery exports increased in value by nearly 200 million euros over the same period.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2024, this growth continues. In the first four months of the year, trade between the United States and Italy exceeded 320 million euros, marking a <\/span>7.6% increase<\/b> compared to the same period in 2023 (Source: Istat data processed by FederUnacoma).<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, the United States accounts for 14.51% of Italian exports in the agricultural machinery sector, ranking as the top trading partner, ahead of France and Germany. In the first four months of 2024, U.S. imports of Italian agricultural machinery grew by 12.61% (250 million euros), while imports of tractors saw a slight decline (-6.71%, amounting to 71.2 million euros).<\/span><\/p>\n
