Top-selling Italian products abroad

The Made in Italy brand represents excellence in the world: it is no coincidence that Italian products are among the best-selling products abroad.

However, what goods from our country are most valued and in demand outside our borders?

Although the quality of Italian products is generally recognized, some areas are particularly valued abroad. In this article we will delve into each of them.

Top-selling Italian products abroad, what they are and the reasons for their success

We have already talked about it: in order to boast the Made in Italy brand, a product must have been designed and manufactured in our country, taking advantage of its raw materials and adhering to specific safety and hygiene standards.

What, then, are the best-selling Made in Italy goods abroad?

Food products

We know well how much Italian cuisine is appreciated all over the world. Gastronomy products are therefore among the most popular for export, in particular:

  • Pasta (produced mostly in Veneto, Campania and Emilia Romagna - there are more than 200 types in our country)
  • Bread and flour
  • Tea
  • Spices
  • Coffee
  • Chocolate
  • Wine (in addition to white, rosé and red wines, sparkling wines such as prosecco and sparkling wine are also in demand)
  • Cheeses (including pecorino, parmigiano reggiano, buffalo mozzarella)
  • Olive oil
  • Fresh meat (such as the typically popular Florentine steak) and cured meats (primarily Parma ham)
  • Dishes and ready-made sauces

Among all these products, chocolate, tea, coffee, spices, and ready meals are the best-selling ones, contributing to a turnover of more than 6.5 billion euros.

Fashion and accessories

Italian fashion is known all over the world, especially thanks to luxury brands that have always had an international outlook.

Brands such as Armani, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, represent extreme sophistication and quality, even in accessories.

Among the latter, eyeglasses constitute the greatest appeal, along with watches.

Automation

Major Italian products exported abroad

An important slice of Italian exports abroad relates to the automation sector. Italian-made cars and motorcycles (such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Piaggio's Vespa) are considered highly representative products of our country and embody aesthetic and performance qualities that are particularly appreciated around the world.

Their market does not experience substantial setbacks, but continues to thrive and grow even in Southeast Asian countries.

Furniture

Italian-made designer furniture and building accessories are in high demand abroad, aided by their winning aesthetics and the high quality of the materials used to make them.

In particular, ceramic products such as tiles are popular, as well as iconic-looking functional items such as those from famous brands like Alessi and Guzzini.

Demand for organic products, a growing sector

There is one commodity sector that has marked a surge in recent years for the’Italian export.

We are talking about organic products, which are also becoming increasingly popular on our tables thanks to increased awareness with respect to environmental protection issues along with human health issues, promoting a healthier and more conscious lifestyle.

Worldwide sales of organic products, both food and beverages, reached nearly 125 billion euros in 2021, with the United States being the largest exporter (source International Organic Organization IFOAM).

Italy is increasingly asserting itself among the top countries in organic product exports, ranking sixth on a global scale, preceded in Europe only by Germany and France.

In our country, in fact, the amount of land devoted to organic farming is gradually increasing, and this is reflected in steadily growing production: 17% of land is devoted to this type of production, compared with 9% which is the European average.

If we analyze Italian agri-food exports, 6% are organic products, a value that is bound to rise.

Which ones are the most popular? Definitely wine, cheeses, pasta, olive oil, cured meats.

Note how, in recent years, more and more attention has been paid to the packaging of the products themselves, made more functional to prolong their shelf life and facilitate their transportation even over considerable distances, and made in a way that adheres to guidelines that abandon materials such as plastic in favor of recyclable and biodegradable materials.

The appreciation of Made in Italy on an international scale, involves not only the mentioned sectors but also many other commodity areas.
