Last Jan. 14, 2026-with immediate effect, the Government of India announced the cancellation of the Omnibus Technical Regulations on Safety of Machinery and Electrical Equipment (OTR). The decision was formalized in an official order issued by the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
The cancellation, which affects the notification previously issued under S.O. 3649(E) on Aug. 28, 2024, aims to simplify the regulatory landscape and reduce administrative burdens for companies. The regulation, which was introduced with the aim of regulating the safety of electrical machinery and equipment, will no longer be mandatory. This change was adopted as part of the Government of India's policies to facilitate business and improve the competitiveness of the industrial sector.
Machines previously covered by this X - OTR scheme no longer need BIS certification to be exported to India. This decision aims to simplify operations and reduce the compliance burden on companies.
