We are European Champions, also in trade, in as many as 830 products out of 5,388. This data, reported in an article by Luca Orlando on July 9th in Il Sole 24 Ore and processed by the Edison Foundation, testifies to the strength of Italian exports in Europe.
Through an analysis and reclassification of the 5,388 codes into which international trade is divided, it emerges how Italy, in various situations, is ahead of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Spain thanks to a positive balance of $140 billion.
The trade surplus is generated mainly thanks to Jewelry, leather bags, valves, faucets, tiles, eyeglasses, footwear, boats, tiles, machinery, pasta, coffee, and chocolate, car parts, and much more. Let's look at the Top 3 in detail:
The largest positive balance is in jewelry, with Alexandria, Vicenza and Arezzo districts to generate assets of five billion. Absolute value that is nonetheless affected by the prices of the raw material, gold, which is subject to wide fluctuations.
In third place for a positive balance is the broad area of faucets and valves, with Piedmont and Lombard districts to shred international competition, especially thanks to the provinces of Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Vercelli, Brescia and Bergamo.
Altro punto di forza è il packaging, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i macchinari per l’imballaggio, dove l’Emilia Romagna è leader mondiale: l’Italia ha un attivo di 2.6 billion, which rises to nearly four billion with plants for the beverage sector, another leading European sector. In this case, Octagona can say it saw it coming: as early as May, we spoke of the extraordinary opportunities for Italian packaging in countries like the United States, which has been exporting at a sustained pace in recent years.

Per quanto riguarda nello specifico l’agroalimentare, invece, cured meats, cheeses, and wines have shown the most growth over the past 5 years, venendo apprezzati in tutta Europa e diventando così il simbolo dell’italianità all’estero. Infatti, il valore complessivo delle esportazioni di salumi ammonta a 2,2 miliardi di euro, con un incremento del +31,57% between 2016 and 2020. The cheese sector, on the other hand, is worth a total of 11.2 billion euros, with an increase of +33,77%; Finally, wine is the largest market (€18 billion between 2016 and 2020), once again recording double-digit growth. +11,38%.
