Selling online is not an obvious decision: starting a new site or a proprietary e-commerce from scratch can be economically expensive and discourage businesses that want to grow and expand through marketplaces and Digital Export.
Yet, Italian companies cannot miss a constantly increasing phenomenon. In fact, in 2021 e-commerce saw a growth of 33%, reaching a turnover of 64 billion euros. Not only that: according to Netcomm, the trend will also be confirmed for the rest of 2022. In particular, over 33 million Italians made online purchases in the first quarter of the current year, therefore with growth of 14% compared to 2021.
In other words, the boom in online commerce continues not only as a positive consequence of the pandemic, but also as a real trend for the future of Italian businesses. But for companies in which sectors do the marketplaces offer the best opportunities? Digital Export favors which products?
It is interesting to note that the product market reached an overall value of 34 billion euros in 2022, with an increase of 10% compared to the previous year.
It's the one who rules the roost food, which confirms itself as the industry with the highest growth (+17% is the annual increase compared to 2021), followed by clothing, with a growth of 10%, and the IT and electronic components industry (+ 7%).
Also noteworthy is the increase recorded by services: after the collapse linked to the Covid-19 restrictions, the sector began to grow again, led by the recovery of events (+35% compared to 2021) and by services linked to the tourism (+33%).
Furthermore, another element that emerged from the research conducted by Netcom during the first part of 2022, online purchases are paid directly online at the time of the order in almost 90% of cases: only in 10.4% of times are such purchases paid at the time of delivery.
These numbers therefore highlight how digital commerce has entered the habits of Italian consumers on a daily basis. Selling products and services online is here to stay, and it wasn't just a flash in the pan due to the pandemic. For businesses, it is therefore necessary to think about targeted Digital Export strategies, such as the implementation of external marketplaces.
The marketplaces take on the function of real online markets to all intents and purposes. The logic is completely similar to that of supermarkets: customers visit the website of a marketplace to buy (and sell) a good or a service, within which the goods of different sellers are grouped.
A marketplace it is therefore a valid solution for the Digital Export strategies of Italian companies that want to sell abroad: it is in fact an opportunity to quickly grow your business, showcasing products or services to millions of users in Italy and abroad, without the worry of excessive expenses.
At this point the question arises spontaneously: what are the most popular marketplaces? Which ones should be adopted?
